Sunday Sex Reads: Best of the Week

“We wanted the show to be sex-positive, and the titillating, exploitive aspects of sex are usually the more base ones where it’s a biological function of sorts,” executive producer Bryan Fuller told us. “There is something masturbatory about most sex sequences, even though it’s not masturbation because there’s a partner, but it feels masturbatory in expression. And one of the things I am very fascinated with in American culture is the sex negativity.”
* Every Show Should Handle Sex Like American Gods (io9)

Warning for survivors of sexual assault and abuse. “The internet allows us to have sex with people situated on the opposite side of the world. To bridge that distance, we use web-connected devices like masturbation sleeves and vibrators. What would the legal implications be if, say, skilled and malicious hackers were able to hijack one of these devices? On one hand, they will have gained control of an object that is used to penetrate, and therefore are potentially responsible for it. On the other, the device’s owner is likely to have overall control of the hardware and, we assume, consents to its use.”
* The law isn’t ready for the internet of sexual assault (Engadget)

(Still wondering why I’m banned for sharing a link to tinynibbles.) “Documents seen by the Guardian, which form part of the Facebook Files, show for the first time the detailed rules applied by the company to police sexual content published on the site – as well as the scale of the challenge faced by moderators tasked with keeping Facebook clean.”
* Facebook flooded with ‘sextortion’ and revenge porn, files reveal (Guardian)

“Post-Pornhub, there’s simply less demand — for paid content, for new content. But if history has proven anything, it’s that pornography finds a way. [Gizmodo AU] spoke to some of Australia’s premier porn performers and producers. They’re struggling, they’re doing it tough, but they’re using technology (and their innate sense of hustle) in a last gasp fight for survival.”
* After Pornhub, Australian Porn Is Fighting For Survival (Gizmodo AU)

Warning for survivors of sexual assault and abuse. “When Julian Assange was first confronted with allegations of sexual assault—allegations a Swedish prosecutor announced Friday, nearly seven years later, would not be pursued—the WikiLeaks founder claimed that he was the victim, victimized by his accusers: two former fans accusing him of nonconsensual sex.”
* What Just Happened in This Infamous Rape Case Is Why Many Women Don’t Come Forward (attn)

“Once again, cops are arguing that they need to be allowed to have sex with suspects in order to investigate prostitution allegations. And once again, lawmakers and journalists are acting like exploitation and assault of sex workers by law enforcement is a rare occurrence, rather than a national epidemic.”
* Alaska Cops Fight for the Right to Sexually Exploit Prostitution Suspects (Reason)

“The idea of android prostitutes has generated polarized reactions from researchers and ethicists. Would paying robots for sex be a good thing? Is this the dawn of a brave new world, or of a dark, mechanical future?”
* Sexbot Brothels: What Are the Pros and Cons of Robotic Sex Workers? (Future of Sex)

“Every one of Laura Dodsworth’s penises is unique: introvert and extrovert, straight and bendy, wobblers and bobblers, growers and showers. There are contented penises that have led full lives, and disappointed penises that have let down their owners – or been let down by their owners.”
* Me and my penis: 100 men reveal all (Guardian)

Warning for survivors of sexual assault and abuse. “Federal law requires colleges and universities to report sexual assaults on campus. It’s different for kindergarten through 12th grade, where there’s no guidance to report those assaults between students. In elementary, middle and high schools, the Associated Press found a shocking level of sexual violence among students throughout the U.S.”
* The kids aren’t all right (Reveal)

“… But these days, Not Another Teen Movie seems like a relic of a bygone era, and it’s easy to imagine its jokes being lost on today’s teenagers, in large part because Hollywood doesn’t make movies about teenagers desperate to lose their virginities anymore. The teen sex comedy, once a staple of the summer movie season, no longer exists.”
* The Internet Killed the Teen Sex Comedy (Mel Magazine)

Sex News: No more porn at the Armory, PornHub’s ID grab, gay slang does ‘Dropbox’

  • “A British law that forces porn site owners to check visitors’ ages could lead to a global database of viewing habits ripe for hacking, say digital rights activists. The Digital Economy Act of 2017, passed into law on April 27, is expected to require websites to check user ages using a regulator-approved verification method starting in May 2018. Privacy advocates are fearful that MindGeek, which has over 100 million daily visitors to its sites that include PornHub and Brazzers, could create a database of adult viewing habits on a scale never seen before.”
    * PornHub’s Owner is About to Card Everybody in the UK (Inverse)
  • “For Feminista Jones, ‘12 Years a Slave’ raises important questions about sexual agency and our community’s history of sexual abuse. … “The opening scene of 12 Years a Slave helped me to think about the orgasm as an act of resistance, sex as an act of reclamation for the enslaved Black body.”
    * From Slavery to Sexual Freedom (Ebony)
  • “Kink.com has released the movie that became the final shoot at San Francisco Armory. “Twin Peaks” parody “Damn Fine Pie!” marked the end of adult film production in the historic San Francisco Armory. … Since “Damn Fine Pie!” was shot in February, Kink.com production has largely moved to Las Vegas.”

  • “Even if you are lucky enough to have some modicum of control over who knows and who doesn’t, you will still probably be outed. You will be outed again and again. Your naked images will be found and sent to your brother by his friends. They will be emailed around by your classmates. A local news station will do an expose on the studio you work for — they will wait outside to film you as you are leaving at the end of the day, and they will show this footage on the evening news.”
    * Once You Have Made Pornography (The Establishment)
  • “Gia Paige was just one person who appeared in the six-part follow up to 2015 documentary Hot Girls Wanted which looks at women working in the sex trade, appearing in an episode which explored racism within the porn industry. The adult star’s real first and middle names were used in the episode titled ‘Money Shot’ – something Paige claims she didn’t give her consent to.”
    * A porn star featured in Hot Girls Wanted is ‘living in fear’ after Netflix revealed her real name (Independent)

Much gratitude to our thoughtful sponsor, Nubile Films.

  • Ethical.Porn has launched, exploring multifaceted aspects of “ethical porn.” Guided by the ethos “Transcend Genre. Emphasize Consent. Start A Conversation,” Ethical.Porn examines adult content as a complex entity that is synergistically interconnected to wider society.”
    * Ethical.Porn Launches With Myriad Industry Voices (XBIZ)
  • “She speaks in a curiously high-pitched Scottish accent and tells me that she loves science fiction and, of course, Matt. Mr McMullen claims that she learns from her users but when I ask Harmony what it feels like to be jealous, she apologises and says that she “needs to improve [her] skills”. The app that powers Harmony is already available to buy, although only directly from the Realbotix website, a spin-off from Abyss. Neither Google’s nor Apple’s official stores will carry it because of the explicit content.”

Sex News: Porn production halted, Republican porn scare, UK sex for rent scandal

  • “The US porn industry’s leading trade body has called for adult film production to be halted amid fears that an actor has HIV. The Free Speech Coalition (FSC) issued the warning to prevent the potential spread of the virus, after a performer on a database used to protect the health of actors underwent an HIV test. … It added that the performer had not worked on a set during the window of transmission and “had not participated in any fluid exchange shoots since their last negative test.””
    * Porn production in the US shut down over HIV fears (Independent UK)
  • Hey look yet another article with no actual news about this (potential?) issue. “The Trump administration has yet to take any concrete action against the adult industry—and probably won’t anytime soon because it has a lot of other things going on.”
    * Republicans Are Coming for Your Porn (Vice)

  • “Joseph John Schmidt III, a Navy chief special warfare officer who has spent 23 years in the military, has made more than 30 porn films since 2010 under the name “Jay Voom,” most of them with his wife, porn star Jewels Jade, she told The Huffington Post …”
    * Navy SEAL Under Fire For Moonlighting As Porn Actor (Huffington Post)
  • “New research from Brigham Young University (I know right?) examines the role of pornography use, self-perceived “addiction” to pornography, and religion on relationship anxiety. Results were surprising, and confirmed a building school of research which indicates that the effects of pornography vary based on moral and religious beliefs, and that seeing oneself as addicted to porn is actually far more damaging than actually using pornography.”
    * Religious Conflict Makes Porn Bad for Relationships (Psychology Today)
  • “Vulnerable young people are resorting to paying for accommodation through sexual services advertised on classified ads posted online, it is claimed. An investigation by BBC South East Today uncovered numerous adverts offering free rent in exchange for “services” on websites such as Craigslist. ”
    * Sex-for-rent adverts are ‘exploiting’ young homeless people (Independent UK)

Much gratitude to our thoughtful sponsor, Nubile Films.
